A panel discussion featuring industry experts from tea, mining, and education sectors, highlighted the challenges and opportunities of social dialogue, emphasizing that collaboration between employers and employees is essential for improving workplace conditions in Rwanda. Key points included the need for employers to recognize the long-term benefits of social dialogue and the role of the government in supporting collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).
The participants recommended to strengthening awareness campaigns on the benefits of social dialogue and CBAs and the private sector confederation committed to raising awareness among the members ( employers to implementing minimum wage policies that account for the cost of living). Trade unions should synergize and combine efforts for effective advocacy and enhance training programs to improve negotiation skills for both workers and employers. All social actors were invited to join trade unions to address the significant challenges that workers in Rwanda face, such as inadequate wages, long working hours, and insufficient social protection. Unanimously, participants recalled national labor law reform and domestication of the ratified conventions as well as continuous dialogue between employers and workers which are critical for improving job security and equity in the workplace.
